3DDE shows you the contents of a dataset as a collection of 3D blocks. By colouring, sorting, segregating and filtering these blocks you can quickly draw insights from the data without the need to manipulate a spreadsheet or draw conventional charts.
Please click on the headings below for further information.
For the beta phase we are concentrating on the Chrome browser only. We believe 3DDE should work in most modern browsers, including those on up-to-date tablets. However we cannot provide support for browsers other than Chrome at this stage.
Use the "Add Dataset" menu option. You can upload a file in CSV or XLS format or copy and paste tabulated data (e.g. from a spreadsheet). You can also load a Google Spreadsheet (provided you have marked it as shared for public viewing) by pasting its address.
The uploaded dataset requires a single header row followed by the data rows. Columns are analysed to determine whether they are data series (i.e. items that can affect the block size), data categories (i.e. items that can affect the block colour) or "other" (i.e. they only show in the information panel when you hover over a block). You can override the default analysis during the import process. [Note: Negative data series values will be treated as zero.]
Any data you load will be added to the "Dataset" menu but will be viewable within your browser session only. During the beta phase there is no option to save the dataset for repeated use.
On a modern machine 3DDE works smoothly with up to 20,000 records (in Chrome). It can work with more but the screen response will not be as smooth.
3DDE is and will always be free to use for academic and personal purposes.
3DDE is free to use for commercial purposes during the beta phase. We will announce pricing as we get closer to going live.
Let us know! We're open to suggestions. The easiest and quickest way is to click the "feedback" button which appears in the bottom-right corner of the screen during normal use.
